"The FFA finished the 1st quarter of school strong. Over the past few weeks the chapter has attended several events.
We were able to attend Leadership Training School at Trico high school, where our very own Ashton hosted a workshop as part of the Section 24 Officer Team. In addition to this, several greenhand students were able to meet with our State FFA President and section officers at our chapter visit.
On September 26th, some of our Ag Mechanics students travelled to the Southern Illinois Construction Expo where they were able to meet with industry representatives, and experience some hands-on learning.
On September 28th we competed in the Agricultural Sales contest, where members compete to show their skills in understanding and marketing agriculture products. The team placed 3rd.
On October 3rd we competed in the Land Use contest, where students compete to show their knowledge in soil science and practices. The team placed 7th.
On October 5th, our chapter held its monthly meeting. After the meeting students were able to compete in our Pickleball Tournament. The winners of the tournament were Nolen and Mr. Duncan!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Like we did last year, in memory of Amirah, the last week of September we will have a week long "Catching Kindness" program. We are asking that all grade school teachers catch their students being kind and give their students a gold sticker to wear. Also, we are encouraging students to wear yellow/gold that week as well.

"The FFA has been off to a great start so far this school year. In August we hosted a Kickoff event for parents and families, attended the DuQuoin State Fair Farmyard Follies, and traveled to Decatur to attend the National Farm Progress Show. So far in September, we have attended the COLT and Greenhand Conference at SIU to grow our leadership skills, hosted our first chapter meeting, and competed in the Section and District Horse Judging competitions. We placed 5th at the section contest, as well as the district event. At the district event, there were over 50 teams and 500 members competing, and Junior, Nolen, placed 3rd individual. In addition to this, officers Ashton and Olivia hosted a horse safety and care presentation for Elementary and Jr. High Students this past week.

Crab Orchard CUSD #3 would like to send our thoughts and prayers to both the Benton and West Frankfort communities.

In case anyone heard sirens, I wanted to make you all aware that a 2nd grade student was choking and an ambulance was called as a safety precaution. Williamson County Sheriff's Department responded first, followed by the ambulance. The student is with their parent, and doing well. While the sirens may have been alarming to the community we are thankful that both departments responded so quickly and all students, faculty and staff are safe and in class.
Please see the attached brackets for the Jr High Baseball Regionals.

Our Book Blast is coming to an end here at the school, but the website stays open until Sunday night to accept contributions from the friends and family you’ve invited to help. So far, we've raised over $6,000!! We’ve had fun giving away Treasure Chests and even an iPad over the past two weeks. Also remember, if your child hasn’t received the 3 Treasure Map rewards yet, we will be handing those out next week to any students that qualified. You’ve done such a great job helping our school with our Book Blast. The next exciting part of our Book Blast voyage will be to see just how many books will be heading our way in the coming weeks!

As a reminder, Crab Orchard CUSD3 implemented a safety procedure for all visitors and guests entering the building, including before/after school. Parents, guests, and visitors will be asked to sign-in at the high school office at which time they will be issued a visitors pass. Unknown and/or new visitors will be required to show a driver’s license, or government issued ID card in order to enter the building. Parent/Visitors will also be asked to verify a previously scheduled appointment. The security measures that we have in place are to protect the safety of our students, staff and school building. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Sy Stone - Superintendent
The Book Blast is going strong as we approach these last few days of the event. The first 50 students have received their 3 rewards, but it’s not too late to complete your Treasure Map, earn your 3 rewards, and help your classroom earn a shopping spree to purchase books and supplies for the classroom! If you complete your Treasure Map by inviting 10+ friends and family members, you will receive your 3 prizes at the end of the Book Blast. When 60% of the classroom’s students register and invite 10+ friends and family members, that classroom will earn a $100 shopping spree. If ALL the classroom students invite at least 10+ friends and family members, the classroom will earn a $200 shopping spree. Remember, students are not selling any products, and friends and family are not obligated to donate. We are simply trying to get as many high quality, grade specific books for our students as possible. Thank you for all of your help!
