Vienna slips past Lady Trojans 4-3
March 24, 2009
Crab Orchard, Ill. -
Vienna's softball team needed a two-run double by Brooke
Childress in the top of the seventh and a game-ending strikeout by
pitcher Marissa Ross to secure a 4-3 victory against Crab Orchard
Tuesday.
Childress' hit gave the Lady Eagles a 4-2 lead heading into the
final half inning when the Lady Trojans mounted a comeback.
Andrea Whitehead and Miranda Jones led off with consecutive hits
before Courtney Arnold grounded out a fielder's choice that erased
Whitehead at third. After an intentional walk to Lacey Newbold,
Taylor Ray's RBI sacrifice flyout made it a one-run game with two
outs and runners on first and second.
Ross eluded further damage by striking out pitching counterpart
Brendee Killen to end the game. The freshman righthander scattered
nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks while Killen threw a
five-hitter fanning six and walking four in the loss.
"This was a very good game and win for us," Vienna head coach Ross
Hill said. "Everyone contributed. Ross was solid in the circle. And
we got some key hits in key moments."
Crab Orchard took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on
Newbold's RBI double that plated Arnold, who also doubled.
Vienna tallied the next two runs in the third and fourth, beginning
with Kelsey Harper's RBI bunt single followed by Cassidy
Shoemaker's run-scoring double.
The Lady Trojans tied the game at 2 in the fifth when Whitehead led
off with a double and later scored on Newbold's double.
"We had missed opportunities at the plate and left some runners on
base in scoring position," Crab Orchard head coach Vernon Williams.
"Brendee wasn't at her best, but she threw well enough to win. We
also had some mental mistakes in the field."
Crab Orchard, which fell to 2-1, hits the road against NCOE at 4:15
p.m. Thursday.
